Clan Symbol:
Clan Name: Senju
Clan History: The Senju are one of the three ancient clans that claims direct descent from the Sage of Six Paths, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki. Along with the Uzumaki, they rise from the lineage of his younger son Asura. Asura is only second to the Sage himself as the most important figure in Ninshū, the philosophy that laid the foundations to modern Ninjutsu possible.
From Asura, the lineage splits in three - Tōkaju the eldest brother, Kuragari the younger, and his youngest daughter Senchako. In the years after the death of the Sage’s mother Princess Kaguya, the deified ruler of the continent thought immortal, the world was engulfed by violent war unmatched even by the long conflicts of the clans in centuries to come. Whispered tales of earth-shattering techniques unmatched by any ninjutsu today, and of rampaging demons not even under any kind of control - simply pointed in desperation in the direction of an opposing army. Though he was by far the less talented child of the Sage, Asura’s abilities were still leagues beyond any challenger, and for many years he shielded the pacifistic practitioners of Ninshū in their Reed Country enclaves.
Asura was reluctant to teach his children his brother Indra’s invention, ninjutsu, believing that it would twist his teachings beyond recognition - but his hesitation meant that his inheritors would have little guidance in separating Ninshū as a philosophy from ninjutsu as a weapon. As a man who put his strength in bonds, Asura found himself alone as a protector - and found that he was not enough to protect them alone. He left behind an heir who refused to die the same way. Kuragari had years prior departed quietly to the west, and his older brother was not eager to lose any more family. Tōkaju opened up the dusty scrolls left by Indra and set to work arming his people, and the Senju clan was born.
After almost a century of war, the world began to resemble the one as we know it. Ninja clans were young, untested, their abilities strange and mysterious. Politically powerful clans from Kaguya’s time, still leagues more powerful than the Sage’s descendants in wealth and influence if not in shooting fireballs, turned their conquered slices of the empire into feudal nations. Over the centuries these clans fought, bickered, divided, united - few of them survived the centuries, but those mercenary ninja clans endured. More and more of them cropped up, too, either splitting off of those first few clans or sprouting from descendants of those the Sage had awakened power in during his travels across the world. The Senju became the right hands of the Reed country’s court, turning their philosophy of forming bonds to politics.
Over the centuries, the Senju became one of the most famous ninja clans on the continent. Their fame as such that if the common civilian had heard of a ninja, they were likely a Senju, and even as many other clans fought against them they did so with Senju-invented techniques. Unfortunately, shinobi do not pay royalties, and as time went on the Reed country’s economy slowly withered. The Senju had not seen a user of Wood Release, their most prized treasure, in generations. Constant skirmishes whittled at their numbers. Even through centuries of battle, the Senju have not forgotten that they are supposed to be carrying the fire of Ninshū. With their comrades they have always stressed connection and peace - but the world has never allowed them breathing room to practice it.
Over the years, the Senju formed close alliances with the Aburame and Nara clans, and through their political connections nurtured those clans into powerful forces in their own rights. This powerful trio turned the Reed country into one of the most stable in the world - but it worried the nobility, who considered the Senju’s politicking to be acting outside of a shinobi’s scope. Upon the formation of Sakyugakure this conflict came to a head. The Reed country’s clans knew that any nation with a united front of clans, armed with years of cooperation and pooled resources, would be unbeatable.
The daimyō refused to hear such an obvious affront to his control of the country as a ‘hidden village’ for quite a while, but the Senju started without his permission. A wood release user had finally been born to the clan a few years prior, an obvious sign from the heavens that building Numachigakure was the right thing to do. Construction began immediately, without the daimyō’s permission, the young Chigiri Senju creating sweeping walkways and twisting enormous trees into foundations for dozens of houses. Once the daimyō relented, the clans of the area moved into already-built neighbourhoods, and still found many houses empty. Even after Chigiri’s untimely passing in the Reed-Sea war, the Senju task themselves with the physical maintenance of the village, and their lavishly-carved architectural style dominates. Though barred from formal leadership as the daimyō’s condition for allowing the village to exist, the Senju hold much of the power in Numachigakure, as well as running its library, archives, and founding the first ninja academy in the continent.
